Jessica's Blog Post #2 (Connector)

For my second blog post, I'm going to connect the weather in the book, The Tenth Circle, to our weather now. Right now, we are enduring a lot of rain and in the book, the characters live in Maine, which gets a lot of rain and snow. We don't have snow, but we are having rain right now. Also, Trixie runs away to Alaska, which also has a lot of bad weather. We are struggling with many problems with the weather, and although the book never mentions the people having problems with the weather, I can infer that they might have. That was my second blog post.

Jessica's Blog Post #1 (Connector)

For this blog post, I decided to connect the book that my group is reading, The Tenth Circle, to the current news about Hati. In the book, Trixie, the main girl, get's raped. This is a very emotional and physical change and made her very withdrawn and shocked. She was destroyed and hurt. The people in Hati have also been through a very hard time and are struggling to rebuild their lives, just as Trixie was in the book. Hati is also very emotionally racked right now. Trixie also needed people to help her although she did not want anyone to provide her with therapy and help. Unlike Trixie, the people in Hati are in great need of help and they know it. They are welcoming all the help that they can get to rebuild their cities and their lives. That is my connection to the current news.

Connections between books

Connection:

(I am going to compare Nineteen Minutes with The Tenth Circle)
Both books have the same basic setup: some tragedy is shown quite simply with no feelings attached, the book delves deeper into peoples lives and persona's, than the legalities creep up. Usually, the book ends with a summary of sorts and some shocking event that you would have never guessed. In Nineteen Minutes, a nerdy boy, Pete, shoots up his school, then the book develops his character. He is a boy who has been tormented his entire life for being emotional, smart. During this, funerals happen, people sue. There is also the back story of Josie and Pete's relationship, along with Josie and Matt's relationship. Finally, there is the shocker of who really killed Matt.

In The Tenth Circle, Trixie's ex-boyfriend, Jason, date rapes her. After this, we see the transformation that happens within Trixie and how she starts seeing who she was. We see who Daniel was in Alaska, why he changed. There is a story of Laura, who cheats with a student named Seth. Trixie lawyer, Mike Bartholomew is weaved into the text. Though the "law" aspect is not quite as prominent in The Tenth Circle. The ending tells what really happened at the night of the rape, and the shocker of who killed Jason.

As you can see, these books have very similar formats.

Mare's Summary of Chapter 1-2

At first we were introduced to Laura Stone, a college professor who teaches Dante's poem about hell. We all get the feeling that she is doing something wrong, which is later confirmed in that chapter where we find out that she is having an affair with one of her students. It then goes to Trixie and Daniel Stone, father and daughter. There are obviously is some sort of tension between them. Trixie then goes through the motions of school, where we learn that her boyfriend whom she loved broke up with her, and that she has kept it a secret from her family. Readers definitely see that she still has feelings for him when she breaks down in the middle of class when Jason(her ex) is present. Zephyr her best friend is introduced, and she has a plan so that Trixie can get Jason back. She lies to her dad and escapes to her friends party.

Summary and Character Analysis

Summary of chapters one through four:

Trixie's life is normal: a group of friends, a hot boyfriend, and a loving father. All of that is turned upside down when her exboyfriend rapes her at her best friends party. At the same time as the rape, her mother is sleeping with one of her students in his dorm. After a while of recouperating, she returns to school where she is stared at and treated like a leper. At the end of chapter four, Trixies father, Daniel, kidnaps Jason and takes him to the forest. After realizing who he was rebecoming, he leaves. As the case of Trixies' rape unfolds, the friendships she thought were hers and the trust that she had gained were all put to the test.

Character analysis:

Trixie: She is your average popular girl, until her world is shaken. The world she has pretended to live in has a breakdown. The core of her being is shaken, making her ask herself who she really was. At a point, she wanted to change who she was. She thouhgt that apperences matter, causing her haircut. Because her entire existance before the rape is a facade, a mind game, she starts breaking down from the change of the life. To my belife, more that is common for a rape victim

Daniel: He is a father who doesn't want his daughter to hurt. He has a secret life that he tries to suppress. You get glimpses to who he was through the cracks in his shield; when he takes Jason to the forest, you clearly see what he used to be. His comics also show who he was. He loves his wife; when she cheats, one of the reasons for leting her stay was Trixie. Trixie needed a mother, and Daniel saw too much resemblence between Trixie and Laura to cast Laura away.

The next post will be connections and charater analysis of Jason and Laura.
